Seattle Backyard Cottages Approved: You may remember that I wrote about Seattle backyard cottages coming to a vote yesterday. The proposal was approved and city wide Seattle (unless you are in the Shoreline District) is allowed one ADU - either as a backyard cottage on lots that qualify in size (have to be more than 4000 square feet, etc.) or an ADU inside the house walls. You can only have one, but now there are more options than just your basement for an ADU (Accessory Dwelling Unit) in Seattle!
Seattle Backyard Cottages and Real Estate: Are you interested in finding Seattle real estate that qualifies for a backyard cottage? There are already many firms stepping up to advertise their backyard cottage services. I look forward to seeing how this plays out! Density does belong in the city and this is a great way to make affordable housing as long as quality construction and design is respected! I know a perfect Greenwood home offhand that would be a great candidate and it is on almost a third of an acre!

About Me:
Seattle real estate has been a big part of my life for well over a decade since I began my career in real estate, but also before that time when I was in the process of purchasing my own first home. Buying your first home can be quite overwhelming, but I have managed to help many first time home buyers along the way.
Move up Seattle buyers and other types of specialized purchasing is a great passion of mine! I love Seattle houseboats and you can find me down on the docks of Lake Union and Portage Bay several times a week. Other aspects of Seattle real estate that I adore include Queen Anne Real Estate,Wallingford Real Estate, Ballard Real Estate, Green Lake Real Estate, Laurelhurst Real Estate, Magnolia Real Estate, andSeattle Waterfront Real Estate.
In addition to being a Seattle residential broker and founder of Cooper Jacobs & Seattle Afloat, I am also a member of CBA (Commercial Brokers Association) and head of the Cooper Jacobs Commercial Division in an effort to provide excellent commercial real estate services to the Seattle commercial real estate industry. With a background in accounting and management, it is my great pleasure to coordinate our Seattle commercial brokers.

Courtney, I'm glad to hear about the approval. As long as the added dwelling suits/enhances the property it's a nice solution to an obvious problem. I hope the approval has also addressed any local parking issues that may affect the neighborhood.
This is good news. I've seen a few backyard cottage designs and would like to incorporate them into my future home design.
Hey Greg - I think it will be good, too, and provide some much needed housing.
Hi Darrell - it is a good idea as long as desing is definitely considered:) I personally would love to see self sustaining solar powered backyard cottages....
Courtney We have nothing similar here - seems to be a viable solution to creating more housing in the city
Hi Courtney, thanks for this article, very important! By the way, what is the case about Shoreline? Is it just that it is not ruled by Seattle since it's a separate city, or...?
I believe the expanded backyard cottage ordinance takes affect today. I think it is great and long overdue. I would like to give a nod to microhouse (microhousenw.com). They have standard contemporary 800 sf cottage plans that are fully customizable with prefab options available. Contact them for a free analysis of your sites.
Backyard cottage financing anyone?
