THIS is a fabulous post by my office and I wanted to share it again with anyone - please leave all comments on the original as it is not mine :)
Pioneer Square, located in the Southwest corner of Seattle and developed back in 1852.
Long ago it was the location of a lumber mill owned by Henry Yesler. Much of the area is landfill and when you visit Seattle you must experience the Underground Tour. Schedule to walk with an informed tour guide and learn about Pioneer Squares history and see the original storefronts that are now below modern street levels which is a result of earth grading to raise the level of the land to prevent plumbing from backing up during high tide and flooding due to Pioneer Square being built on tidelands.
The early structures in Pioneer Square were mostly made out of wood which burned down in the Great Seattle Fire of 1889.
Safeco Field, home of the Seattle Mariners baseball team, is located in Pioneer Square. The Seattle Seahawks play NFL football at CenturyLink Field here, and the Major League Soccer Seattle Sounders share this awesome facility with the football team.
Pioneer Square has many significant history icons. There is a Fallen Fire Fighter Memorial that's a tribute to Seattle's firefighters that have died in the line of duty. Each of their names is inscribed in the granite base of the memorial. atop the granite are firefighters cast in bronzethat demonstrate the firefighter stance while controlling high powered water nozzles extinguishing flames.
The historic Seattle Hotel was replaced with a parking garage in 1962. It is called the "sinking ship" due to the angle of the structure from certain points around the property. The entry to the garage is on the East side and in order to keep the cars level in a structure that is built on a slope, from the West side of the parking garage the structure towers above the street and comes to a stylish point.
Pioneer Square descends in elevation as the area is viewed from East to West and where the land ends at Elliott Bay on Washington's Puget Sound. There is so much to see and do along Seattle's waterfront.
There are many places to live in this vibrant area and check out the listings here at
